FREIGHT COSTS AT DIZZYING HEIGHTS

Fewer vessels and container scarcity

pushes rates up and shipment frequencies down

May 25, 2021

The Covid crisis is not over. In December, we were expecting better shipping availability after the usual bottleneck of the Chinese New Year. However, the opposite happened. Kicked-off by the Suez blockage incident. Many ships got delayed or rerouted.

However, what we did not foresee was that the carriers (i.e. the ship owners) reduced the number of available vessels, putting a lot of pressure on capacity.

At the same time, there is a huge scarcity of empty containers in Asia. Despite new production, this supply will not be balanced for many months.
